born in 1977
Tamrat Gezahegn attended the Addis Ababa Fine Arts School, where he studied under painter Mezgebu Tessema. After his graduation in 2001 the artist and members of his class founded the New Art Space Studio in Addis Ababa where he made and exhibited his work for several years. Tamrat felt constraint at the art school by the structured curriculum and frustrated by requirements to stretch and prime canvas and make other customary preparations for painting.
He preferred to work with whatever materials were readily at hand in a spontaneous manner. Gradually Tamrat identified the kinds of materials he wanted to use and developed a distinctive artistic vocabulary with a personal brushstroke, line, colour sense that were evident whether his compositions were abstract or representational. Tamrat uses house paints, sometimes in combination with pastel stick and India ink. He enjoys experimenting with these materials and is not concerned with the permanence of his work.
