Bisrat Shibabaw works and lives in Addis Ababa. She graduated from the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts and Design in 1985 and continued her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad. Since her return to Ethiopia the drawings, collages and paintings of Bisrat Shibabaw are far removed in style and subject from socialist realism.
However, the solid academic training she aquired in Leningrad provides a foundation for her idiosyncratic and fanciful approach to rendering figures, flora and fauna, and natural phenomena.
The artist also teaches at the School of Fine Arts and Design in Addis Ababa. As a freelance artist she has displayed her work at numerous group exhibitions in China, France and USA.
